Malagoli was born on April 28, 1906, in Araraquara, São Paulo. Very young he went to São Paulo. At sixteen, he worked as an assistant to Francisco Rebolo, painting finials, garlands and small scenes that decorated the walls of mansions in the early 20th century. Between 1922 and 1927, Malagoli studied at the Men's Professional School. and, later, at the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts of São Paulo. At that time, he strengthened relations with Rebolo, Volpi and Mário Zanini, artists who, in 1935, formed the Santa Helena Group. At the age of twenty-one, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, joining the National School of Fine Arts in 1927. Between 1931 and 1942, he took part, together with Edson Motta, João José Rescalla, Bustamante Sá and other artists of the group called Núcleo Bernardelli. In 1943, he left to study in the United States. Three years later, he returned to Brazil, already a renowned master, with his first solo exhibition in New York where he sold all his paintings. Between 1946 and 1952, back to Brazil, Malagoli worked in friends' studios and taught drawing at the Brazilian Fine Arts Association (ABBA), at the Brazilian Drawing Association (ABD), in Rio de Janeiro, and in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. In 1949, he won the National Travel Award from the National Salon of Fine Arts.
