Burle Marx 1909 – 1994
Roberto Burle Marx was born in São Paulo, on August 4, 1909. He was a Brazilian plastic artist, but gained international renown by exercising the profession of landscape architect. He lived a large part of his life in Rio de Janeiro, where his main works are located, however it can be found all around the world. His participation in the definition of Brazilian Modern Architecture was fundamental, being part of the teams responsible for several famous projects. The garden terrace he designed for the Gustavo Capanema Building is considered a landmark in the rupture of Brazilian landscaping. Composed of native vegetation and sinuous shapes, the garden (with contemplative and living spaces) has an unprecedented configuration in the country and in the world. Since then, Burle Marx started to work with a very organic and evolutionary language, identified with artistic vanguards such as abstract art, concretism and constructivism, among others. He died in Rio de Janeiro, on June 4, 1994.
