Cândido Portinari (1903 - 1962)

Cândido Portinari was one of the most famous Brazilian painters. He was born in the city of Brodowski, São Paulo State. During his career, he studied at the School of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro. He visited many countries, among them, Spain, France, and Italy, where he finished his studies. In the year of 1935 he received an award in New York for his work "Café". From this moment on, his work became known all over the world. His most famous paintings are his self portrait, the pictures of his mom, and the famous Brazilian writer, Mario de Andrade. Another well-known painting, that is presented here, is called "Retirantes" painted in 1944 in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro
