Iberê Bassani de Camargo 1914 - 1994

The painter, printmaker and professor Iberê Bassani de Camargo was born in Restinga Seca, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on November 18, 1914. He died in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on August 09, 1994. In 1927 Iberê began his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts of Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. He strenghtened his formation divided between Rome and Paris. In Italy he studied with the surrealist De Chirico, and in France he took classes with André Lhote.
In 1942 he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he attended the National School of Fine Arts, in this period he joined other artists, including his engraving teacher, Alberto da Veiga Guignard to found the Guignard Group. Iberê won numerous awards and participated in several international exhibitions, such as the Bienal de São Paulo, American Hispanic Art Biennal on Madrid, the Venice Biennale and the Tokyo Print Biennal, among other important exhibitions. In 1995 the year following his death, the Iberê Camargo Foundation was created.
